INDUSTRIAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL GUIDE TO COKE OVENS IN THE FIVE MILE CREEK WATERSHED AND JEFFERSON COUNTY
Through an educational grant from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and Cawaco RC&D, the Industrial Archaeological Guide to Coke Ovens in Five Mile Creek Watershed and Jefferson County was published in 2012. This guide highlights the location and history of numerous coke ovens throughout the region. Coke ovens where used a century ago to superheat tons of coal extracted from locations around the region to produce coke. Coke fired the blast furnaces in the industrial districts of the region and brought Birmingham to prominence as the industrial center of the South.
