Five Mile Creek Recreation Committee

The committee members include:  Michael Sznajderman, Alabama Power, Roger McCondiche, Mayor of Brookside, Charles Jones and Jim Henry, Sloss Industries, John Prestridge and Philip Smith, Central Alabama Sportsman’s Club, Darryl Aldrich, City of Fultondale, Tom Maxwell, RPC, Wendy Jackson, Fresh Water Land Trust, Birmingham Bicycle Club, Birmingham Urban Mountain Peddlers, and Charles Nix, Five Mile Canoe and Company.

Group goals include the establishment of a canoe trail, a Tour de Brookside bicycle trail, a path for equestrians, a four-wheeler park, a recreation calendar, and advertising on a national scale. The group would like to seek funding for a state highway rest stop brochure, funding for additional gaging stations at Prudes Creek and Ketona, develop an Alabama moving water web site for the Scenic Waterway Trail, and an ADA compliant fishing pier in Brookside along Five Mile Creek.
 
Grants
The committee suggested the following projects for funding:

  • State highway rest stop brochure
  • Develop an Alabama moving water web site for Scenic waterway Trail, example is the Loyd Owens Canoe Trail www.alsunrise.com/parks
  • Handicap access fishing pier at Bensko Park, check with DCNR for funding
  • Development of 2 canoe launch access points
