Come join Cawaco Board Member Jim Pitts at the Chilton County Experiment station August 7, 2010 for the Chilton County Farm, Home and Wildlife Expo. See the directions and topics listed below.

Chilton Research and Extension Center Click here for more information.

It’s fitting that the Chilton Research and Extension Center is located in the shadow of Clanton’s famous giant peach water tower just off of I-65, because at the CREC, peaches rule. When the center was established in 1944, its mission was to identify superior varieties and develop new management techniques that would help Chilton County’s peach producers maximize their profits. And that’s still its mission today. The CREC does work with other small fruits—most notably kiwifruit—but peaches have priority.

Jones Valley Urban Farm and Cawaco RC&D Council are currently inventorying all of the community, neighborhood, business, and school gardens in the greater Birmingham area. They will create an interactive map accessible via the internet for the general public to have greater ease of access to garden and food resources.

Steph and Emmie are interviewing folks at each garden to get contact information for the data base – name of garden, address, garden manager, garden history, public or private, and GPS location. Attached you will find an Excel document listing the gardens in the inventory. If you know of any more gardens that you do not see listed, please email any information about them to semunkachy@gmail.com. This project sponsored by Francesca Gross/Cawaco, Rachel Reinhart/JVUF and Andy Olds/Catalyst.
